Yoga and Microdosing

yoga-and-microdosing

Microdosing and yoga; the iconic duo. I am so excited to write this article for you as I have been using microdosing as a tool to advance my yoga practice for years. I am a strong advocate for the benefits of microdosing and yoga both separately and together. Both practices can be viewed as self-care and self-development methods. Microdosing can act synergistically with yoga, bringing out the elements needed to tune in to yourself and settle deeper into your practice.

In this article, I will go over what is yoga, what is microdosing and how they work alongside one another. Let’s start with the basics!

What is yoga?

Essentially, yoga is a large group of mental, physical and spiritual practices/disciplines which originated in ancient India. Some practices include but are not limited to; breath work, meditation variations, adoption of specific bodily postures and mindfulness.

In recent dates, yoga is most commonly practiced with the motive of increasing mental and physical health and often to gain spiritual enhancements. One of the main ‘goals’ in yoga is to focus on creating harmony between the mind and body. The word ‘yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘yuj’ which means ‘to join’ or ‘to unite’.

What is microdosing?

Microdosing is the act of consuming a micro-amount of a psychedelic substance. The two most common substances to microdose with are magic mushrooms/magic truffles (Psilocybin) and LSD (Lysergamide).

This may sound daunting, however, it is important to note that the dose required to microdose is so small that it shouldn’t result in any psychoactive effects if done correctly. Instead, you should only notice a slight enhancement in both your inner and outer environment but nothing noticeable enough to be considered a ‘high’. Individuals microdose for a multitude of reasons.

Some benefits one can reap from microdosing include but are not limited to; increased creativity, motivation, focus, well-being and so much more. Everyone’s list of benefits seems to look different, displaying the complexity of this practice. Funny enough, both yoga and microdosing seem to have some similar benefits.

How yoga and microdosing go hand in hand

While there are many ways that microdosing can enhance certain areas of your yoga practice, I have divided a few of said areas into sections to keep things straightforward.

Here are a few ways that microdosing can improve your yoga practice.

Emotional Depth

One very common benefit from both yoga and microdosing is accessing a larger emotional capacity. Society conditions us from a young age to push our emotions to the side. In fact, being a sensitive person is often viewed as a negative thing. While being ‘overly’ sensitive (whatever that means) can trigger some additional suffering, being sensitive can also be a superpower!

Microdosing allows you to face your true feelings just as we often find ourselves doing so on our yoga mats. You may find that more emotions are surfacing on dose days. If this is the case for you, try to make time to get on your mat on a dose day and see what happens! One of my yoga teachers once said to me ‘‘If you haven’t either cried or laughed while doing yoga, have you ever really done yoga?’’.

Although yoga is practiced using Asanas (poses) as your vessel, it is just as much about the emotional aspects as it is about the physical aspects. It’s all about balance!

Increased Focus and Energy

One area that microdosing has really helped me level up with is my energy levels! Microdosing is a fantastic tool for boosting energy and focus simultaneously. Although some yoga is practiced with the motive of winding down and requires you to relax, other yogas require energy!

For example, if you know you are attending an Ashtanga or Vinyasa class that day, try taking a microdosing in the morning and thank me later! Sometimes it can be very difficult to get your head in the right space and get what you need out of your session.

Microdosing, being an excellent focus method, can really help you get into that blissful flow state with a bit less struggle than you may usually experience. If you had a difficult day full of struggles and stress, then you know it takes a lot of mental strength to go from that kind of a mental state to a focused and centered one. There is no harm in needing a little external boost here and there!

Motivation

One of the best ways to gain momentum with your progress is consistency. Even if we know for a fact that something will make us feel better, our brains have a funny way of convincing us to avoid it anyway.

Even if you absolutely love yoga, it can still be very hard to show up for yourself and actually get on your mat. As a professional procrastinator, I can say that microdosing has without a doubt helped me beat procrastination when it comes to yoga, work and other areas of my life that I typically struggle with.

Taking a microdose in the morning can have a powerful effect on how you perceive your daily tasks. Sometimes, the idea of the task is far worse than actually just doing the task itself. Additionally, microdosing is a great way to ‘rewire’ the brain. You can gain a new perspective and ways of looking at things, which can often result in increased motivation and inspiration! Microdose for motivation, so you can remain consistent throughout your yoga journey.

Final thoughts

When practicing yoga, balance is key. If you are not able to think/feel outside of the box, you may find yourself feeling rather stagnant in your practice. Microdosing is an all-around effective tool for deepening your practice and taking elements of your yoga practice with you outside of your sessions.

Yoga is much more than being flexible and performing difficult poses. Yoga is about going inward and outward at the same time. In one way or another, I believe that microdosing and yoga are the same in this sense.

Microdosing doesn’t just change the way you view the world. It can actually change the way you view yourself, those around you and the world in which you all share. When you take a step back, the yoga journey and the microdosing journey are a lot more similar than you may have previously thought.
