10 Steps You Can Take to Save The Planet

It‘s no longer news that global warming, climate change, pollution, and rising sea levels are threats to our homes. Therefore, taking conscious steps in ensuring our home’s continuous existence is crucial.

When we say “home”, we don’t mean the actual building you live, where a “house in probate dispute” can spring up after you are gone. We mean our natural habitat, Mother Earth. The truth is we can’t all be doctors or scientists. We can do more than patient care and vaccines against viral outbreaks.

Still, we can contribute one way or another to keeping this planet safe. If you are pro-nature and pro-earth, then read these 10 steps you can take to save the planet

The good news is, these steps are simple everyday moves that can go a long way, especially if many individual hands are on deck.

10 Ways to Save the Planet

1. Conserve more Water

One of the ways to save the planet is by being more aware of your water conservation. Perhaps, you wonder what’s the need of conserving something that’s an abundant part of our sea. It’s estimated that about 1% of our planet’s water is fresh and available for consumption. Seawater may be abundant but isn’t on that list of freshwaters.

Essentially, when you waste water, you waste scarce resources. You also threaten the existence of other organisms that rely on freshwater. Start making a conscious effort today to conserve water and its availability. Being mindful of your water usage helps in aquatic environment maintenance and reduction of pollution!

2. Walk more and be conscious of your car usage

One of the effects of greenhouse gasses on the Earth is trapping more heat in the atmosphere, causing the Earth to heat up more. It also reduces activities that lead to the production of these gases as a way of helping the planet.

One of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions is transportation. Therefore, you’ll be doing more good by opting for alternative means of transport. This includes biking, walking, etc. Additionally, keeping up with your car’s maintenance can also help in reducing greenhouse gas emissions if driving a car is your only option. Little changes go a long way and it’s important to simply do what you can!

3. Reduce, reuse, and recycle

Reduce, reuse, recycle are the three simple R’s you can engage in to help save our planet. You can start by reducing purchases that come in plastic materials. This causes land and ocean pollution and leads to the annual deaths of millions of aquatic life. It also causes chemicals in the water that are hard to remove and require heavily funded projects.

Furthermore, why bin everything when you can recycle what you can and think of ways to reuse some of your waste? This not only decreases pollution but also the cost of waste management. Finally, you’ll do well to recycle by opting for products made out of recycled materials. This way, you’ll be supporting companies that prioritize saving the Earth over profit.

4. Have you tried composting?

Composting helps to degrade organic materials, returning them back to the soil instead of wasting the leftover nutrients of your scraps. Good compost usually contains plant nutrients and essential microorganisms. So, you’ll be enriching the soil, as well as promoting ecological biodiversity, and environmental sustainability.

Need more reasons why you should start composting? You’ll also be reducing land pollution, too! This is because a portion of your waste have been used to make other species and crops thrive.

5. Switch to LEDs

Fluorescent bulbs are not all bad. However, a light-emitting diode (LED) is a better option. This is not just for your energy savings but also for the environment. This is because they utilize less energy and emit light within a narrow wavelength band. They also generate less heat and will ultimately reduce the greenhouse effect. If you haven’t yet switched to LEDs, now might be the time to replace your conventional bulbs.

6. Eat sustainable foods

Yes, humanity requires food to survive. That’s why there’s a need for large-scale production of foods to meet demand. However, a significant amount of greenhouse gas (which is detrimental to the planet) is produced from the large-scale production of foods. That being said, it’ll go a long way to choose food from your local farmers and seek out less proceed food.

7. Plant a tree

You probably know by now that trees absorb Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), and Nitrogen Oxide (NO). These are all greenhouse gas that raises the temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere. It is no doubt that trees are important to the Earth’s sustainability. That’s why the UK government has proposed the planting of over 10 million trees in England. Feel free to use that as some inspiration and plant a tree or two yourself! Great change can occur from a single seed.

8. Try to reduce plastic-packaged products

Many products are commonly packed in plastic materials, one of the leading causes of land and water pollution. Nearly eight million tons of non-recycled plastic find their way into the ocean, causing millions of aquatic life deaths. This means that water will require heavy treatment to bring up the quality for safe consumption. Remember, if our seas die, then we die.

You can take steps to help save the Earth and its creatures by opting for products with recycled materials. More so, you can create awareness of the dangers of plastic waste by spreading the word and putting your awareness into practice!

9. Be informed of potential threats to the planet

Let’s face it, you can’t make any positive changes or inform someone else on what they can do if you don’t even have a clue yourself. The more you know, the better equipped you are at educating others.

Always try to stay updated on the latest news about climate change and the ever-growing list of things that are affecting the Earth. Research, research, research! Self-educating is your super power when taking steps to help the planet!

10. Lend your voice

Thanks to technology and advancement in science, younger generations are waking up to the warning signs Mother Earth has been trying to tell us for a long time. It is a hard pill to swallow, however, the fact is we are destroying the planet and causing climate change. To ensure we won’t be that last generation, it’s vital to sensitize others. This will go a long way in getting more of them to be conscious of everyday actions they can take to help save the planet.

Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are an excellent avenue to reach out to many people at once. Guess what? It doesn’t have to be about reaching out to those in authority. You can sensitize everyday people, such as friends, family, colleagues. This way, they can make positive choices that’ll help the world. Change starts from within!
