Why taking Lions Mane Mushrooms alongside microdoses is a good idea

Have you been microdosing for a while and would like to take things to the next level? When travelling down the microdosing rabbit hole, you will come across something called stacking. In this article, I will be introducing you to this new method of microdosing and the benefits attached.

Microdosing can be as complex or as simple as you wish. Just as taking large amounts of psychedelics is a personal act, so are small amounts. Even micro-amounts. This practice displays how complex and unique each of us is. Everyone has their own way of going about their microdosing journey.

Let’s begin with the basics.

What is lion’s mane mushroom?

Loins mane mushroom, also known as Hericium Erinaceus, is a naturally occurring medicinal mushroom belonging to the tooth fungus group. This beautiful and distinctive mushroom is not only safe for consumption but an excellent Nootropic.

Lion’s mane is native to Europe, North America and Asia. This gorgeous mushroom can be easily identified by its long spines, its classic occurrence on hardwoods and its tendency to grow in a round-shaped clump of dangling off-white spines. Its common name, lion’s mane mushroom, makes total sense as this mushroom without a doubt resembles the shape of a lion’s mane!
This mushroom is famously paired with microdosing psychedelics, which is what we will look at next.

What is microdosing?

Microdosing is a fast-growing practice that involves consuming tiny amounts of psychedelics to improve brain function. Individuals typically use psilocybin (found in some mushrooms and truffles) or LSD (part of the Lysergamide family). Both of these compounds have a similar list of benefits, however, some microdosers still have their preference. Microdosing is all about optimizing! The dose for a microdose is so small that it offers no psychoactive effects, meaning (if done correctly) you should be able to get on with your daily tasks.

So what’s the point of microdosing if you don’t feel anything? You shouldn’t get high off a microdose, however, you may have an extra skip in your step on dose days! You may feel a bit lighter and sharper, but not high. Despite the effects of a microdose, there is a lot going on in your brain on a neurological basis. Microdosing has demonstrated its potential for improving multiple cognitive functions in the brain during Paul Stamets’ study. A few being improved memory and motor skills/reaction time.
Paul Stamets is a world-renowned mycologist, author, climate crisis activist and beloved member of the psychedelic and fungi community. Stamets stands for microdosing. More specifically, he stands for stacking. Let’s look at what stacking is!

Stacking Psilocybin and Lions Mane Mushroom

When you begin microdosing, you always have a choice of which protocol to follow. The two most famous protocols are the Fadiman’s Microdosing Protocol and the Paul Stamats Stack protocol. Essentially, the Fadiman Protocol calls for a larger dose that is less frequent. The Paul Stamets protocol calls for a smaller dose that is more frequent, with additional supplements taken alongside the microdoses, AKA stacking.

Some microdosers don’t follow any protocol and just dose when they feel like it. There are so many ways you can go about it. It is always good to ask yourself why you are microdosing in the first place and figure out some sort of rhythm that works for you and your lifestyle.
When it comes to stacking alongside microdoses, Paul Stamets is the one who invented microdosing stacking! Stamets suggests taking psilocybin, lion’s mane mushroom and niacin. But why? Let’s look at that now.

Why should I take lions mane with psilocybin?

Paul Stamets swears by his stacking method, stating that doing so increases neurogenesis. Taking lions mane, psilocybin and niacin can work synergistically, providing a cumulative effect that is much more impactful than dosing on its own. When talking about his stacking method, Stamets said ‘‘One plus one doesn’t equal two-it equals four in this case.’’

Here is an example of the perfect stack if you are using magic truffles:

Between 00.25g-00.50g of magic truffles (depending on the species).
Between 50-100mg of Niacin (Vitamin B3).
Between 300-500mg of Lions Mane Mushroom extracts.

Essentially, taking niacin and lions mane combined with psilocybin will enhance all three brain supplements’ effects. According to Stamets, niacin increases the registration/deposit of psilocybin in the brain whilst boosting the effects of lion’s mane mushroom. Taking a microdose on its own does increase cognitive functions. However, if you want to take it to the next level and increase the volume of your benefits, stacking is a fantastic route to take.

Final thoughts

As with most things, you will gain better results when you are microdosing and/or stacking while leading a healthy lifestyle. Microdosing has been shown to work best in healthy adults. Make sure you are feeding your mind positive media and your body nourishing foods. Drink plenty of water, staying active and try not to miss out on your daily dose of sunshine and laughter!

At Microdose Journey, we believe in the power of a collective approach. Nature thrives with diversity and we are the product of nature, which is something we often forget. When seeking results that go below the surface, it is always best to partake in a collection of methods. This is especially true when talking about health! Whether that be mental or physical health, doing multiple small actions will likely be more beneficial than a single action.
Everything you do and consume will have a knock-on effect that will leak out into unexpected areas of your life. Therefore, choose what you allow into your bubble wisely. Even down to your doses.
